1980년대 말, 인터넷이 보편화되며 인터넷망을 통해 방대한 양의 정보가 유입되었고, 자신의 정보를 찾기 위한 검색에 필요한 프로그램이 필요했다. 바로 그 역할을 해낸 것이 팀 버너스 리의 하이퍼텍스트 시스템이다.

====== 월드 와이드 웹(World Wide Web) ======
세계 규모의 거미집 또는 거미집 모양의 망이라는 뜻으로, 하이퍼텍스트 기능에 의해 인터넷상에 분산되어 존재하는 온갖 종류의 정보를 통일된 방법으로 찾아볼 수 있게 하는 광역 정보 서비스 및 소프트웨어다.

그가 웹을 구상한 것은 학생 시절부터다. 옥스퍼드 대학 시절에 그는 정보의 연결을 어떻게 하는지에 대해 고민하기 시작하고, 취직 후에도 그 생각은 계속 되었다. 1980년 유럽입자물리학 연구소인 CERN에서 연구원으로 근무할 당시, 연구소에서 진행하는 모든 프로젝트의 정보를 정리하는 일이 꼭 필요하다고 생각한 그는 HTML의 원형인 '인콰이어'를 만들게 되었다.

1980년 그가 유럽입자물리학 연구소인 CERN에서 연구원으로 근무할 당시에는 표준화된 컴퓨터 규격이 정해지기 전이었는데, 사용하는 프로그램이나 파일 형식이 모두 같은 게 없었기 때문에 단 하나의 파일 하나를 공유하기 위해서라도 어렵고 복잡한 작업이 필요했다. 따라서 자연스럽게 연구원 간의 소통은 줄어들었고 중요한 데이터도 방치되게 되었다.

이를 답답하게 생각해오던 팀 버너스 리는 연구소에서 진행하는 모든 프로젝트의 정보를 정리하는 일이 꼭 필요하다고 생각하였다. 앞서 말했듯 그는 이 때 HTML의 원형이라고 할 수 있는 ‘인콰이어(CERN의 연구원들이 문서를 이용하고 공유하기 위한 체계)’를 만들게 된다. 그는 훗날 자신의 자서전을 통해 인콰이어의 작명에 대하여 말을 하게 되는데, 인콰이어란 자신이 어린 시절 봤었던 책 무엇이든 물어보세요(Enquire within upon Everything)에서 따온 것이라 하였다. 이는 잡다한 정보들로 모든 정보의 세계로 통하는 관문 이라는 뜻을 내포하고 있다고 말하였다. 이를 통해 그가 정보의 세계적인 연결에 대해 얼마나 많은 꿈을 갖고 있었는지 견주어볼 수 있다.

이렇듯 인콰이어의 제작을 통해 그는 학생 시절부터 꿈 꿔 오던 정보의 세계적인 연결에 대한 희망을 더욱 더 키우게 되었고 이때 그의 머릿속에 아주 멋진 생각이 떠오르게 된다.

====== "하늘 위에 엄청나게 큰 가상 문서 시스템을 세우면 어떨까?" ======
이것이 월드 와이드 웹 탄생의 출발점이었다.

당시 개인 컴퓨터 안에서 링크를 클릭해 원하는 정보를 띄우는 것은 익숙한 방식이었다. 하지만 이 정보를 열람할 수 있는 범위를 국내뿐만 아니라 전 세계로 넓게 생각한 팀 버너스 리는 웹 상에서 서로 링크를 공유하여 원하는 정보를 주고 받는 것이 어떨까? 라는 생각을 갖게 된다. 대부분의 사람들은 그의 생각을 이해하지 못했지만 그의 몇몇 동료들은 그가 생각해 낸 웹이라는 가상의 공간에 흥미를 느꼈고, 그의 연구에 큰 지지와 함께 힘을 실어주었다. 그리고 마침내 1990년, 오늘날 http라 불리는 정해진 규격과 약속으로 정보를 주고 받을 수 있는 월드 와이드 웹(World Wide Web)이 탄생하게 된다.

{{:timbernerslee02.jpg?300 |}}사실 1984년 말과 1989년 3월에 그는 구상한 내용을 정리한 네트워크 보고서를 제출하였을 때에는 쉽게 받아들여지지 않았다. 1990년, 네트워크 전문가인 로버트 카일리아우와 협업하여, 버너스-리는 다시 한번 네트워크 보고서를 제출한다. 넥스트에서 새로 만들어진 컴퓨터를 사용하는 네트워크 실험에 대한 허락이 떨어졌고 그의 생각은 점차 현실 세계에 한 발짝 다가서게 된다. 그리고 마침내 그는 효과적으로 정보를 공유하고 활용할 수 있는 하이퍼텍스트를 이용한 정보 전달 방법을 구상하게 된다.

{{ :htdefn.gif?300|}}여기서 낯선 개념일 수도 있는 하이퍼 텍스트란, 1960년대 테오도르 넬슨이 고안한 Hyper와 Text의 합성어로 참조를 통해 독자가 한 문서에서 다른 문서로 즉시 접근 할 수 있도록 하는 텍스트를 말한다. 문서의 특정 자료가 다른 자료와 링크로 인해 연결되어 순서에 상관없이 자유롭게 넘나들 수 있게 되는 것이다. 팀 버너스 리는 바로 이러한 하이퍼 텍스트의 특징을 자신의 월드 와이드 웹에 접목시킨다면 정보 검색과 공유가 아주 쉬워질 것이라고 생각하였다. 그리고 1990년 11월, 클라이언트 프로그램이 되어줄 웹 브라우저를 만들고 12월에 브라우저로 HTML 문서를 연결하게 된다. 그리고 그 12월에 최초의 웹 주소인 ‘info.cern.ch’를 만들어 여러 시스템에서 ‘info.cern.ch’의 접속에 성공하게 하였다.

이후 팀 버너스 리는 빠른 속도로 웹을 발전시켰다. 1991년 5월에 CERN에서 사용할 수 있는 웹을 발표하고, 8월에는 뉴스 그룹에 웹 도구를 발표, 12월에는 미국 텍사스 주 산 안토니오에서 열린 하이퍼 텍스트 관련 학술 회의 에서 월드 와이드 웹에 대해 발표함으로써 웹이 점차 외부에 그 모습을 드러내게 되고, 진정한 웹 시대가 열리게 되었다. 팀 버너스 리는 1994년부터 지금까지도 월드 와이드 웹 컨소시엄(W3C)의 소장으로 활동하고 있다. 만약 그가 무료로 웹 서비스 체계를 배포하지 않았더라면 엄청난 부를 누릴 수 있었지만 이를 거절하고 세상 모두를 위한 무료의 웹을 개발했다.

그는 이렇게 말했다. “웹의 목표는 인류에 이바지하는 것이다. 우리는 그 목표가 이루어질 수 있도록, 자신도 상상할 수 없을 만큼 창의적인 미래를 만들어가고 있다.” 팀 버너스 리는 모두가 주인이 되는 웹의 미래를 그리고 있다. 팀 버너스 리는 웹 탄생 20주년을 기념해 쓴 칼럼에서 웹의 보편성과 개방성을 다시 한번 강조했다. 웹은 '누구의 소유물도 아니기 때문에' 항상 자유롭게 열려있어야 한다는 그의 이유이다.

또한 2009년 2월에 팀 버너스 리는 TED 강연에서 이렇게 말한다. "무엇이든 연결될 수록 연결의 힘은 더욱 더 강력해집니다." 이렇듯 인터넷이 삶과 점차 밀접해지면서 사람들이 인터넷을 통해 보고 느끼고 배우는 모든 것들 역시도 인터넷에 큰 영향을 주게 된다. 이러한 인터넷이 사람들 모두에게 평등했으면 하는 것, 웹을 통해 데이터를 공유 받은 사람들이 또 새로운 정보를 생산하는 환경을 팀 버너스 리는 꿈꾸고 있는 것이라고 할 수 있다.

                WorldWideWeb - Executive Summary

The WWW project merges the techniques of information retrieval and hypertext to  
make an easy but powerful global information system.

The project started with the philosophy that much academic information should  
be freely available to anyone. It aims to allow information sharing within  
internationally dispersed teams, and the dissemination of information by  
support groups.

     Reader view

The WWW world consists of documents, and links.  Indexes are special documents  
which, rather than being read, may be searched. The result of such a search is  
another ("virtual") document containing links to the documents found.  A simple  
protocol ("HTTP") is used to allow a browser program to request a keyword  
search by a remote information server.

The web contains documents in many formats. Those documents which are  
hypertext,  (real or virtual) contain links to other documents, or places  
within documents. All documents, whether real, virtual or indexes, look similar  
to the reader and are contained within the same addressing scheme.

To follow a link,  a reader clicks with a mouse (or types in a number if he or  
she has no mouse). To search and index, a reader gives keywords (or other  
search criteria). These are the only operations  necessary to access the entire  
world of data.

     Information provider view

The WWW browsers can access many existing data systems via existing protocols  
(FTP, NNTP) or via HTTP and a gateway. In this way, the critical mass of data  
is quickly exceeded, and the increasing use of the system by readers and  
information suppliers encourage each other.

Making a web is as simple as writing a few SGML files which point to your  
existing data. Making it public involves running the FTP or HTTP daemon, and  
making at least one link into your web from another. In fact,  any file  
available by anonymous FTP can be immediately linked into a web. The very small  
start-up effort is designed to allow small contributions.  At the other end of  
the scale, large information providers may provide an HTTP server with full  
text or keyword indexing.

The WWW model gets over the frustrating incompatibilities of data format  
between suppliers and reader by allowing negotiation of format between a smart  
browser and a smart server. This should provide a basis for extension into  
multimedia, and allow those who share application standards to make full use of  
them across the web.

This summary does not describe the many exciting possibilities opened up by the  
WWW project, such as efficient document caching. the reduction of redundant  
out-of-date copies, and the use of knowledge daemons.  There is more  
information in the online project documentation, including some background on  
hypertext and many technical notes.

     Try it

A prototype (very alpha test) simple line mode browser is currently available  
in source form from node  info.cern.ch [currently 128.141.201.74] as

        /pub/WWW/WWWLineMode_0.9.tar.Z.

Also available is a hypertext editor for the NeXT using the NeXTStep graphical  
user interface, and a skeleton server daemon.

Documentation is readable using www (Plain text of the instalation instructions  
is included in the tar file!). Document
