-전화기를 발명한 Alexander Graham Bell과 그의 장인인 Gardiner Hubbard가 1877년 Ameriacan Bell Telephone Company라는 회사를 설립하였다. 이들은 1885년에 American Telephone and Telegram Company라는 회사를 후속 설립하였는데, 나중에는 후자가 전자를 흡수통합하였다. AT&T로 알려진 이 회사는 미국 전화산업의 독점적인 전화회사로 성장하다가 1981년에 반독점법에 의해서 여러개의 회사로 쪼개지게 된다 (MCI, Sprint 등).
