Syllabus

The course Communication Theory is an introduction to the various aspects of communications in the fields of interpersonal, organizational, mass media, culture, and new media. The course helps students understand communication phenomena with a social science discipline and engage in critical thinking process. Students will learn several fields of communication research, and get an opportunity to explore concepts and issues in the fields.

Outlines of the course

The topics of the course are composed of introduction, and discussion of various communication theories in everyday-life fields – mainly intrapersonal, interpersonal, culture, persuasion, leadership, group communication, organizational communication, mediated communication.

Students are expected to read the class materials (textbooks and others), and actively engage in discussions on the topics. The theories mentioned in these fields are: message design logics; attribution theory; uncertainty reduction theory, explectancy violations theory, politeness theory, social exchange theory, dialectical perspective, Hofstede's cultural dimensions, face-negotiation theory, social judgment theory, elaboration likelihood model, narrative paradigm, Likert's four system, transformational leadership, contingency model, leader-member exchange, symbolic convergence theory, functional group decision making, organizational culture, structuration theory, organizing theory, agenda-setting theory, cultivation theory, social learning theory, uses and gratification theory, etc.

Course objectives

  1. You should develop skills to engage in critical thinking process in various communication fields
  2. You should develop skills to apply the theories to real communicative phenomena, and
  3. should be able to articulate the phenomena in a meaningful way.

  • R project: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell Laboratories (formerly AT&T, now Lucent Technologies) by John Chambers and colleagues. R can be considered as a different implementation of S. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.
  • Mondrian :: Mondrian is a general purpose statistical data-visualization system. It features outstanding interactive visualization techniques for data of almost any kind, and has particular strengths, compared to other tools, for working with Categorical Data, Geographical Data and LARGE Data

Course expectations and requirement

There will be five examinations, one of which will be dropped. Also, there will be group presentations for communication theory.

Readings

Students are responsible to complete the specific readings before the class session. Students will randomly (upon instructor's call) participate in presenting the theories and their responses to them.

Quizes

15 minute quiz will be held at least 5 times. You can skip or discard one quiz score. Five quiz scores will be counted toward your final grade. No make-up will be offered. Each quiz will cover the materials of reading assignments and class activities since the previous quiz.

Final Exam

No final exam or mid exam.

Your Theory Study Log

There will be either a short essay assignment at each week (See the class schedule page). The essay should be consist of 2-4 paragraphs (1 or 2 A4 paper). This assignment should be listed in your wiki spcace (under your user ID name). You should also bring and submit the assignemnt in print before the class. You should finish all the assignments. Five of them, which will be randomly chosen, will be reviewed, scored, and commented. The grade will be combined completeness + scores for the five assignments.

Group Project

Each group will select theories and positions to study in depth. Group members will explore the topic widely and deeply. The theory that you will cover should be listed and maintained in the wiki page as well. The intent of research project is that you discover information and ideas about the theory that will be presented in the text. You should use the library databases for researching the topic. More specific requirement will be updated in this wiki spot.

Maintaining theory wiki page and oral presentation

Students should take care of the wiki page for the specific topic that they will cover. The page should contain the exaplanation of the theory; answeres to some questions form other students and instructor; and questions for other topics.

Attendance

Your attendance and participation in class is important. Throughout the semester, you will earn a small percentage of points toward the final grade for your participation in the class activities. Class activities cannot be made up.

Assignments

Absolute no make-up.

  • Quizes 4(5) out of 5(6) 40%
  • Maintaining theory study (individual assignment) 20%
  • Mid/Final Research Project (group) 30%
  • Maintaining theory wiki page + participation 8%
  • Participation 2%

All assignment should be completed and turned in on time. Late assignment may not be accepted. If accepted, the grade will be reduced by one level on each day.

Grading scale

Upon university's requirement, it may be necessary to make a bell curve (mutual evaluation) on grade. I will check this and let you know soon.
